What is Dosha?
Ayurveda works on the Tridosha Theory. In Ayurveda, an individual’s health is made up of three fundamental bodily humours, namely Vata (wind), Pitta (bile) and Kapha (mucus). These medical humours are the three forces which govern all biological processes. These humours are responsible for all bodily functions in a living organism and their being in balance enables the healthy functioning of the body. When there is disturbance or imbalance in these Doshas, the body fails to function properly and diseases spring up. A harmonious state amongst these doshas is therefore necessary for homeostasis and thereby good health.

Vata is the aspect of human physiology that is formed from the combination of the Air and Ether elements, and as such it has the qualities of being dry, light, cold, rough, subtle, and mobile. When Vata dosha is agitated these qualities are brought out of balance and one will feel their excess become apparent in a variety of ways. Vata imbalance can manifest as dryness of the skin, organs or bones, and feeling cold, erratic or nervous. It will often express itself in the digestive functions as these are the central fire of the body and are weakened by the excess cold of vitiated Vata. Vata related indigestion will be gaseous and may involve muscular tension and pain due to the rigidity caused by the cold, dry nature of Vata. To help bring Vata into balance, warming herbs and spices are used that stimulate and regulate digestion while soothing the nerves and muscles.
Gastritis is an inflammation in the lining of the stomach. It can occur due to a variety of causes like alcoholism, certain medications, infections, bile reflux, extreme stress and more. The symptoms of gastritis include nausea, bloating, indigestion, vomiting, and burning feeling in the stomach. These symptoms are so common that they are ignored, overlooked or self treated without any permanent relief.
In case of prolonged symptoms, endoscopy or blood tests are recommended diagnose them.
Constipation is a highly serious condition if left untreated for a long period of time. It can lead to the accumulation of toxins which can affect overall health and wellbeing. Ayurveda sees constipation as a reason for many other conditions like dandruff, acne, boils, skin disorders, hair fall etc. When you are constipated, toxins or waste remain in the intestines and get absorbed in to the bloodstream. They, then, enter the other systems and create havoc by lowering immunity and promoting ill health.
*Gastritis- Doctors recommend the use of antacids and other drugs to reduce stomach acid in order to reduce inflammation. In case of infection, antibiotics are recommended. Apart from that, they advise reducing milk products and wheat form the diet while also restricting spicy and oily foods.
The main issues with Allopathic drugs are their side effects and dependency. These drugs cannot be stopped without the consent of your doctor.
*Constipation- Over the counter laxatives and lifestyle changes are the two advices your Primary Health Care Giver would give you. These medicines when used for a long term drain the fluids from the body, damage the muscular function of the bowel and cause dependency.
Ayurvedic Treatment centres on balancing the Doshas for optimum well being.
Recommended Lifestyle Changes
Vata is the ‘king of doshas’ because it is responsible for every movement in the body from breathing to digestion. Vata type people are talkative, mobile, and always worried. They move a lot but their digestion is sluggish. They are generally thin and hardly put on weight. The worst part is that Vatas have very little energy reserve and can get tired easily. Vatas need to avoid vigorous activities, need sufficient rest and stay warm. Vata cannot stand winter and goes out of balance in winters. They suffer from weight loss, constipation, hypertension, arthritis, weakness, restlessness and digestive problems.
